Scientific interests in a nutshell:
Fishes (both marine and freshwater) due to their position in trophic chains play an essential role for the comprehension of the ecosystem functioning and interactions with other species for maintaining equilibrium in marine environment. This role is increasingly important because of the environmental stressors such as fisheries, pollution and climate change and their consequences on aquatic habitats. This is valid in particular also for the cartilagineous fishes as sharks because most of them are threatened and little known for what concern their biology and ecology. In this context it is proving to be of particular importance the study of historical ecology of the fishes, a field of research to which I dedicates some of my first (Storia della pesca in Lombardia, Notizie sull'ittiofauna giuliano-friulana nella letteratura) and recent works concerning some shark species living in Mediterranean Sea. Thanks to the possibility to expand interests and fields of investigation in various disciplines such as art, archeology and antique books we can recognize the profound effects that man has exerted on aquatic life at any time and his impact before our times.
