Scientific interests in a nutshell:

I am interested in the study of biodiversity of stony corals living in shallow-water environments of tropical and subtropical seas of the Indo-Pacific, where they represent the major reef-building organisms of coral reefs. I also study corals living in deep habitats and temperate environments such as the Mediterranean Sea. My research is about different aspects of the biology and ecology of these marine invertebrates, including systematics, taxonomy, phylogenetics, species delimitation, biogeography, evolution, and symbioses with animals and micro-organisms. With the aim to investigate these topics, I use an integrated approach, combining data from genetics, morphology, and ecology within a phylogenetic framework. The morphological analyses include light and electron microscopy, while the genetic analyses include the use of both traditional barcoding genes and genomic data obtained with Next Generation Sequencing approaches such as RADseq and metabarcoding.
